A Storied Past
Roseland Theater first opened as a ballroom and vaudeville theater in 1924. It hosted jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald during its early years. As musical tastes shifted in the 1960s, Roseland became a rock venue hosting bands like The Grateful Dead, The Band, and Velvet Underground. Roseland continued hosting punk, alternative, and indie acts into the 1990s and 2000s.
Closures and Comebacks
By the 2010s, issues with building maintenance and increasing rent threatened Roseland’s future. The theater temporarily closed in 2015 over permit issues. In 2020, property owners announced plans to redevelop the site, again putting Roseland’s fate in jeopardy. But dedication from music fans led to lease extensions, keeping Roseland alive.
Revitalizing an Icon
In 2022, new owners stepped in with plans to revitalize Roseland. Set to reopen in 2023, the updated theater will preserve its original character while adding modern amenities. This renewal returns Roseland to its former glory as one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier live music institutions.
